What medical expenses can I claim?
The CRA has two great search tools that you can use to determine if your medical expenses are eligible.
Can I claim the premiums I paid to my private health plan?
You can claim premiums to medical, dental, and hospitalization plans as long as 90% or more of the premiums paid under the plan are for eligible medical expenses. You can’t claim premiums that were paid by your employer and not included in your income.
Can I claim my dentist/orthodontist expenses?
You can claim dental expenses paid to a medical practitioner. Expenses for purely cosmetic procedures are not eligible.
Can I claim my massage therapy, physiotherapy, or chiropractic expenses?
Yes, if it was a medical service by a medical practitioner.
What if I was reimbursed for these expenses?
For all expenses, you can only claim the part of the expense that you or someone else have not been and will not be reimbursed for. In other words, if your health plan covers 90% of your expense, only claim the 10% you paid out of pocket.
